In the 2027 QS World University Rankings, five Hong Kong universities placed in the top 100, with HKU at 11th, CUHK at 18th, HKUST at 33rd, PolyU at 50th, and CityU at 52nd. Additionally, in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, 20 subjects from Hong Kong universities ranked in the global top 10.

It affirms Hong Kong's position as a premier international education hub and demonstrates the effectiveness of the HKSAR Government's investment in higher education, supporting the National 15th Five-Year Plan to build a leading nation in education, technology, and talent.

CUHK rose 14 places to 18th, HKUST rose 11 places to 33rd, PolyU climbed four places to 50th, and CityU improved 11 places to 52nd. HKU maintained its 11th position.

The EDB spokesman cited the HKSAR Government's steadfast investment in education, support through the UGC for innovation and quality enhancement, institutions' efforts to recruit world-class scholars and invest in infrastructure, and rigorous quality assurance through University Accountability Agreements.

The government raised the admission ceiling for non-local students in taught programmes to 50% and increased the over-enrolment ceiling for self-financing places in research postgraduate programmes to 120%. It also promotes the 'Study in Hong Kong' brand.

The strength of Hong Kong's higher education system aligns with the National 15th Five-Year Plan's strategic goals to build a leading nation in education, technology, and talent.

QS noted that Hong Kong is Asia's most improved system for the second consecutive year and the second most improved globally among systems with three or more ranked universities, highlighting its rapid progress.

A spokesman for Hong Kong's Education Bureau (EDB) provided the statements, emphasizing government support and institutional efforts.
