The Panguna Mine was the largest open cut copper and gold mine in the world when it operated from 1972 to 1989, and it still contains a majority of its copper, gold, and silver ore resources, estimated to be worth approximately $100 billion today.
Under Bougainville’s constitution, ownership of the Panguna Mine reverted to its customary landowners after the Bougainville Peace Agreement in 2001.
