FAQ: Concord Free Public Library's New Alcott Family Collections

The Concord Free Public Library has unveiled significant new acquisitions for its William Munroe Special Collections, focusing on the Alcott family, including rare books, manuscripts, letters, and artifacts.

The acquisitions include letters from Louisa May Alcott to publisher Thomas Niles about Little Women illustrations, an unpublished 1841 letter by Bronson Alcott, the original manuscript for Louisa's A Long Fatal Love Chase, paintings by May Alcott, and various other manuscripts, books, and artifacts.

These materials provide important insights into the Alcott family's relationships, intellectual development, and historical context, and they enhance the library's existing holdings to create a more comprehensive collection for research and public access.

The library acquired them through purchases (like the Alcott Family Collection from Kent Bicknell) and donations (like the Mather Alcott Collection from Tim Mather), with support from the Concord Free Public Library Corporation and The Munroe Society.

Kent Bicknell, an Alcott enthusiast and collector, assembled both the Alcott Family Collection and the Mather Alcott Collection (as curator for Tim Mather). Tim Mather donated his collection, and the library's curator Anke Voss oversees the acquisitions.

The library will host a program and exhibition featuring Kent Bicknell and Alcott scholar Daniel Shealy on March 28, 2026.

All collections are now part of the William Munroe Special Collections at the Concord Free Public Library in Concord, Massachusetts.

Mr. Mather wanted the collection to be treasured, enhance current holdings, stay together, be accessible to all, and honor Sant Bani School, which he believed the Transcendentalists would have endorsed.

Contact Victor Gulotta at Gulotta Communications (617-306-9494) or visit the Concord Free Public Library for details about accessing the collections and upcoming events.
