The Summit aimed to identify, elevate, and accelerate solutions that strengthen grocery retail and expand access to affordable, nutritious food in underserved communities across the United States.

The Summit was held on June 18, 2026, at the University of Illinois Chicago.

The Food Systems for the Future Institute (FSFI) convened the Summit, with Chef José Andrés serving as Honorary Co-Host. Partners included the University of Illinois Chicago, the Global Food Institute at George Washington University, the Harvard Food Law & Policy Clinic, The Food Trust, WANDA, and Dion's Chicago Dream.

More than 200 attendees representing 186 organizations and 41 states participated.

Discussions covered operating strategies for community grocers, building capital stacks, policies for business viability, waste reduction, procurement and distribution models, SNAP's role in retail, and using data for local decision-making.

It was an award ceremony recognizing organizations advancing innovative grocery retail. Oasis Fresh Market received the $50,000 award, while The Mildred Store, Kanbe's Markets, Food Club Network, Saba Grocers Initiative, and DC Central Kitchen each received $10,000.

By bringing together diverse stakeholders to share proven approaches, foster partnerships, and advance policies and financing models that support long-term sustainability and growth in underserved communities.

FSFI will continue working with partners to share promising practices, foster new collaborations, and advance solutions to strengthen grocery retail and improve food access.
